Eucalyptus

64c836f79b0787bdf9c7746fcd2d9247So, lets continue with the “Green” trend. The essential oil that I want to highlight this month is Eucalyptus. Who doesn’t know about Eucalyptus? Every Gym Steam Room seems to have it. It smells like Vicks Vapo Rub. Koalas eat it. The two most common requests that I receive for Essential Oils are Lavender and Eucalyptus. What’s the big deal?

Well, for one, the leaves are green! Yay Green!!!!! Yay month of Green March! CLEAN, GREEN MARCH!!!!! Boy, doesn’t Eucalyptus just smell clean?!?!?!

First off, lets get some fun History on this amazing plant. Have you heard of Australia’s “Blue Mists?” You haven’t? Well, Google it.  This happens when the eucalyptus sap oozes from the trees and the wind picks it up, creating a blue, hazy mist.  Folklore says that wherever the Blue Mists goes, fevers are kept down. Traditionally, Aborigines (Native Australians) used the plant for medicinal purposes: sinus problems, fevers, colds and body pains. Around the mid-1800’s, English Doctors were drawn to eucalyptus oil, starting experimenting with it and, eventually, introduced it to the rest of the world. Pretty neat!

If you have had a massage from me, and have told me your sinuses get clogged easily (especially while laying face down), you know that Eucalyptus is usually my go-to for you. It helps keep your sinuses open and allows you to breathe better. If you have used my “Achy Muscle Soak,” then you also know that Eucalyptus is one of the main ingredients in there to ease muscle soreness. Now, how does Eucalyptus help with breathing and muscle soreness? The major component to this plant is eucalyptol. As more research is being done, scientists are showing the eucalyptol aids in respiration (breathing) and reducing inflammation. Eucalyptus also has a cooling property to it. Which is why it feels so good after a workout or on achy muscles. Eucalyptus also kills germs! It’s what is in my Foot spray.

Now, there are multiple types of Eucalyptus species, and I tend to carry 2-3 different types. SO, what’s the difference? Generally, I just go with the one that you tend to think smells better. However:
